I have had computers since 1982 when I bought my first Apple IIe. I began using the internet around 1990 with a dial-up modem. I’ve been on Facebook for about 6 years, but it only recently dawned on me how social media can be a source of so much information and connection. I know it sounds dumb. I connected with a lot of friends through Facebook, but I failed to see that you can befriend people all around the world, see their perspective and share a small piece of their life. They, in turn, often want to see what my life is like and what I have to say. Even if my opinions aren’t terribly exciting or earth-shattering, they are my unique ideas.
I have written novels and I want people to read them and like them. I write because I enjoy writing. I have a day job. I have sold quite a few books to people whom I know or have met personally, but how would someone 500 miles away even hear about my book? Advertising is what big companies do, but now we can share with thousands of people in a moment. Using Twitter and scheduling tweets on Hootsuite, it is possible for a huge number of people to see a snippet of what you want them to read. Some take the plunge and check it out. I am amazed at the different people who have shown interest. I am learning as I go and still having fun. I try to engage the people who respond to me and have had some wonderful conversations this way.
My initial goal is to reach 1000 followers before launching my next book. At the rate my Twitter following is growing I think this will happen by fall.
